Players aim to defeat Sauron together. Each round consists of two phases: "Army Building" and "Movements and Battles." During Army Building, players acquire new army and hero cards as well as useful action cards. Players take turns moving their units to adjacent fields, engaging in battles if enemies are present. Victory earns points, while defeat allows the next player to continue the fight. The game ends when a player's armies break through the Black Gate for the most points, or if Frodo and Sam reach the final field of Mount Doom. If Gollum reaches it first, all players lose.
