The expansion includes three thematic sets that can be combined with the base game. In the Age of Intrigue, players engage in religious conflicts that affect their resources. The Age of Trade Lords focuses on controlling commerce with key buildings and improved trade ships. In the Age of Barbarians, players build defenses and recruit new heroes to fend off barbarian attacks and thwart rivals.
