Arboretum*

Arboretum invites 2-4 players, aged 10 and up, to embark on a strategic journey of set collection, tile-laying, and hand management, creating picturesque garden paths within a concise 25-minute playtime.

Gameplay Overview

  • Deck Composition: An 80-card deck features ten colors, each representing a different tree species. Colors include cards numbered 1 through 8.
  • Starting Hands: Players commence with a hand of seven cards, initiating the challenge of crafting the most enchanting arboretum.
  • Turn Structure: On each turn, players draw two cards, either from the deck or discard piles. They then lay a card on the table to extend their arboretum and discard a card to their personal pile.
  • Scoring Mechanism: When the deck depletes, players compare remaining cards in hand to score each color. The player(s) with the highest value of cards in hand for a color scores for a path of trees in their arboretum, with paths defined by orthogonally adjacent cards with increasing values.
  • Path Scoring: Points are earned for each card in a scoring path. If the path exclusively comprises the color being scored, players gain two points per card.
  • Competition for Colors: Players must strive to have the highest value in each color to secure points, or risk scoring zero for paths beginning and ending with colors where they fall short.

Special Features

  • Blend of Mechanics: Arboretum seamlessly integrates set collection, tile-laying, and hand management, providing a rich and dynamic gameplay experience.
  • Strategic Decision-Making: Crafting optimal paths requires thoughtful planning, as players strategically draw, place, and discard cards to outscore opponents.
  • Quick Playtime: With a 25-minute playtime, Arboretum offers a satisfying gaming experience without consuming extensive time.

Conclusion

Arboretum stands as a captivating strategy card game that effortlessly balances elegance with depth. Its combination of set collection and tile-laying, coupled with the nuanced scoring system, delivers a rewarding experience for players seeking a brisk yet engaging gaming session. The competition for color dominance adds a layer of tactical decision-making, making Arboretum a delightful choice for those who appreciate strategic challenges within a beautifully themed garden setting.
