Azul: Summer Pavilion*
Azul: Summer Pavilion takes players back to Portugal to embark on an artistic challenge of crafting a summer pavilion, a task assigned by King Manuel I. As master artisans, players must use their skills to construct the pavilion using the finest materials while efficiently managing their resources.
Gameplay Overview
- Setup: Players receive individual boards to create seven stars, each requiring six tiles of a specific color or a mix.
- Rounds: The game spans six rounds. Each round, tiles are randomly drawn to fill factories and the central scoring board.
- Tile Drafting: Players take turns drafting tiles from factories or the center. They must choose all tiles of one color, plus a wild tile if available.
- Tile Placement: Players then place tiles on their boards to fill in the stars, discarding the required number of tiles (including at least one of the chosen color) to the discard tower.
- Scoring: Points are awarded based on the tile placement and connection to other tiles in the star.
- Bonuses: Completing certain areas around pillars, statues, or windows grants immediate bonuses, such as extra tiles.
Special Features
- Color Variation: Each of the six tile colors becomes wild in one of the rounds, adding a strategic layer to the tile selection.
- Board Layout: The player boards feature seven stars with numerical values, guiding tile placement and strategy.
- Endgame Bonuses: Completing stars and covering all spaces of a specific value provide additional points.
- Resource Management: Players must balance acquiring and using tiles to minimize waste and point loss.
Conclusion
Azul: Summer Pavilion is a beautifully designed tile-placement game that challenges players with strategic decision-making and resource management. Its mix of drafting mechanics, pattern building, and scoring opportunities make it a compelling game for those who enjoy a thoughtful and visually appealing experience. The game's replayability is enhanced by the variable wild colors and multiple scoring pathways, ensuring each playthrough is unique and engaging.
