Foundations of Metropolis*
Foundations of Metropolis is a city-building game for 2 to 4 players ages 14 and up. Over roughly 60 minutes you buy up empty lots, raise ever grander buildings, and compete to be named the city's greatest architect.
What's it about?
Across three rounds you purchase deeds to vacant lots and construct new buildings on them. The more complex a structure, the more lots it swallows, but the more prestige it earns. Whoever holds the most prestige at the end is appointed Grand Architect.
How it plays
- Lots are sold through a Dutch auction: grab one early and you pay more, wait and you risk losing the prime parcel.
- Buildings are made of polyomino pieces you fit snugly into your district.
- Income and smart placement keep you solvent across the three rounds.
Mechanically it matches the acclaimed Foundations of Rome, but here with polyomino pieces and a fresh big-city theme.
Who it's for
Hobby gamers who enjoy crunchy economic choices, auctions, and spatial puzzling.
Conclusion
An approachable yet demanding builder with a satisfying tactile payoff. Owners of Foundations of Rome mainly get a new look, while everyone else gains a polished entry into Matsuuchi's city-building line.
