Spell*
Spell is a cooperative party game for 2 to 6 players aged 8+: one person guesses a secret word while the others spell out clues without conferring.
What's it about?
A round takes about 20 minutes. Designed by Ralf zur Linde and published by Skellig Games, Spell swaps explaining for spelling. That sounds dry. It isn't. Nobody may talk, so every clue-giver has to guess where the others are heading, and that is exactly where the best misunderstandings come from.
How a round works
- One player is the guesser; everyone else knows the secret word.
- Taking turns, the clue-givers spell out words meant to point the guesser in the right direction.
- No talking it over. Each player has to build on whatever the others started.
- The faster the guesser gets the word, the more points the team scores.
Who is it for?
- Groups who prefer playing together rather than against each other
- Families with kids who already read and spell confidently
- Tables of up to six looking for a quick warm-up game
Conclusion
Spell runs on lightbulb moments, misfires and sudden flashes of insight. If you enjoy word games and solving things as a team, it is a fast, chatty filler. If spelling is your nemesis or you want strategic depth, look elsewhere. Note that the game is language-dependent, so check which edition you are buying.
