SPIEL Essen 2026: Numbers, Tickets, New Releases and Awards

· boardgame.tips Editorial Team

SPIEL Essen 2026 runs from October 22 to 25 and is bigger than ever: 997 exhibitors from 53 countries are showing 1,885 new releases and, for the first time, fill all eight halls of Messe Essen. The organizer announced the figures at the press conference on October 20 (Reich der Spiele, October 21, 2026). If you still want to go, hurry: at that point every day except Sunday was sold out.

Key takeaways

  • Dates: Thursday, October 22, to Sunday, October 25, 2026, Messe Essen; Thursday–Saturday 10 a.m.–7 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m.–6 p.m.
  • Record fair: 81,200 m² across all eight halls, 997 exhibitors, 1,885 new releases (just under 10% more than in 2025), with 230,000 visitors expected.
  • Tickets: online only, a day ticket costs €25; before the fair, only Sunday tickets were still available.
  • Trends: licensed games from film, TV and books, nature and cozy games, party and communication games for adults.
  • Already decided: The Deutscher Spielepreis 2026 goes to Sanctuary (Artengarten) by Mathias Wigge.

SPIEL 2026 by the numbers

The fair is growing on every metric. With Hall 8 newly added, it uses the entire grounds for the first time, 81,200 square meters in total (spielbox, September 4, 2026). The number of exhibitors rose from 948 last year to 997. The biggest contingents come from Germany with 285 exhibitors, the US with 102 and France with 54 (Reich der Spiele).

Metric SPIEL 2025 SPIEL 2026
Exhibitors 948 997
New releases – 1,885 (just under 10% more)
Visitors 220,000 (record) 230,000 (forecast)
Halls without Hall 8 all eight halls

Visitor numbers and halls come from the spielbox preview, exhibitors and new releases from the press conference.

Opening hours and tickets

SPIEL is open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (SPIEL Essen). Tickets are sold online only; there's no box office on site. An adult day ticket costs €25 (spielbox).

As early as the beginning of September, roughly half the tickets were sold, depending on the day (spielbox). At the October 20 press conference, only Sunday wasn't sold out yet. If you want to go on short notice, check the ticket shop first and plan for Sunday.

What happens beyond the game tables

The side program is broader than in previous years (spielbox):

  • Stage program in Hall 4 on all four days, free and with no registration.
  • Warhammer 40k laser tag arena together with Games Workshop for up to 24 participants (extra ticket).
  • Golden Demon: the painting competition with over 1,000 entries in 14 categories.
  • TCG Awards: for the first time, a dedicated trading card game award right at the fair.
  • "Essen spielt!": three game nights in the city with discounts for anyone holding a fair ticket.
  • Educators Day for teachers, for a small fee.

This year's game ambassador is US illustrator Peter Mohrbacher, known for Magic: The Gathering (spielbox).

The trends of the fair

According to the press conference, five developments shape this year (Reich der Spiele):

  1. Pop culture and licenses: adaptations of movies, TV series and books.
  2. Nature and "cozy games": games where the journey matters more than winning.
  3. Kidults: adults as a growing audience; games for adults grew by more than 20% in the first three quarters.
  4. Party and communication games for adults.
  5. AI in game design: publishers use it for rules, tutorials and development.

Behind all of this is a strong market. In the first three quarters of 2026, the games and puzzles category grew by 8% according to the Board Games INDEX from Spieleverlage e.V. and Circana, while the toy market as a whole grew by only 3% (Brettspiel-News, October 21, 2026).

New releases that stand out in the previews

Picking a few out of 1,885 new releases is a matter of taste. These titles, for example, are featured in the fair picks of the French magazine Gus&Co (October 11, 2026):

Game Publisher What it's about
Kingdom Come: Deliverance – The Board Game Czech Games Edition Deckbuilding adventure in 1403 Bohemia, based on the video game
-60° Nanox Games / dlp games Alexander Pfister and Peter Prinz send research teams across Antarctica
Greenwood Feuerland Spiele Spirits free captured forest creatures; companions can also use opponents
Braided Skies Stonemaier Games Airship travel companies in the Smoking Bones universe
Timespan Alion Games Civilization from the Stone Age to spaceflight across four eras
Gaudí Devir The architect's life; only your two weakest areas score
Drillers Czech Games Edition Mechs drill for ever more valuable ores in an abandoned mine

Deutscher Spielepreis 2026: Sanctuary wins

The public award was settled before the first day of the fair. Sanctuary (Artengarten) by Mathias Wigge (Feuerland Spiele) wins ahead of Boss Fighters QR (Pegasus Spiele) and Galactic Cruise (PD-Verlag, German edition). The children's game prize goes to Toriki from Mirakulus. The results were announced at the SPIEL'26 press conference (Reich der Spiele, Brettspiel-News, both October 21, 2026). Further down the list are Take Time, Reiner Knizia's Rebirth and Cozy Stickerville, among others.

Who's missing, and why

Not every publisher is growing along with the fair. Osprey Games has laid off its entire board and card game team and canceled its Essen booth. Parent company Bloomsbury had already announced in May that it would sell the division. Released games like Undaunted and Imperium remain available, but no reprints are planned (Board Game Wire, October 16, 2026).

Other publishers are deliberately scaling down. Pandasaurus has shrunk its booth considerably and runs sales through Asmodee's distributor EPN. According to CEO Nathan McNair, a big presence used to cost more than €50,000; now the outlay is about a third of that, with similar sales (Board Game Wire, September 22, 2026). So the record fair is also an expensive one.

Bottom line

SPIEL 2026 is the biggest edition in its history: more exhibitors, more new releases, more floor space, and nearly sold out before it opened. In terms of content, licensed games, cozy and nature games and communication games for adults set the tone. If you're not going to Essen, you'll miss the crowds but not the games: most new releases reach stores in the weeks that follow. The next SPIEL takes place in Essen again from October 21 to 24, 2027 (Reich der Spiele). Until then, our list of SPIEL 2026 new releases shows which titles actually catch on after the fair.
