Rebirth*

Rebirth is an elegant tile-laying area-control game by Reiner Knizia for 2 to 4 players. In a hopeful future you rebuild a scarred land: farms spread, communities take root, and castles change hands.

What is it about?

Each player manages a personal supply of coloured tiles. On your turn you place one tile, immediately score the points it creates, and draw a replacement. The game ends the moment every tile has been placed.

How it plays

  • Farms score by group size: each connected farm of your colour pays one point per tile at the instant you place it.
  • Communities in towns are only scored once the town is full, rewarding whoever holds the majority.
  • Castles belong to the player with the most surrounding tiles and can flip until the very end.
  • A double-sided board offers Scotland and Ireland as two distinct landscapes.

Who it's for

Knizia distils his trademark clarity here: quick to teach, ages 10 and up, every placement matters. That accessible depth earned Rebirth a spot on the 2026 Kennerspiel des Jahres shortlist.

Conclusion

A calm, cleanly built strategy game with no downtime. Veterans get the familiar Knizia tension, while newcomers get a gentle door into majority play.

Nominated for 2 awards.
