All "Deutscher Spielepreis🇩🇪 2026" game award winners & nominees in comparison

The audience award "Deutscher Spielepreis🇩🇪 2026" was presented at SPIEL Essen 2026. We have listed and compared all winners and placed games.

  • Winner Deutscher Spielepreis 2026 — Sanctuary
Mathias Wigge's zoo game (Feuerland Spiele, German title "Artengarten") is the smaller, faster sibling of his hit Ark Nova: you build a modern conservation zoo – with tiles instead of cards and a much lighter rules load. After Ark Nova (2022), it is Wigge's second Deutscher Spielepreis.
  • Winner best children's game 2026 — Toriki: The Castaway Island
Wojciech Grajkowski's cooperative adventure (Mirakulus) beats Mooki Island and Paleolino.

Audience award instead of critics' award

In contrast to the Spiel des Jahres, the "Deutscher Spielepreis🇩🇪" is not awarded by a critics' jury but by the gaming community (individual players, retailers, game groups, journalists). It is also called the "players'" award – by players for players. How much the two awards overlap in 2026 shows in Rebirth, Take Time, Cozy Stickerville and Boss Fighters QR: all four were also on the list of the Spiel des Jahres jury.

Which games are eligible?

Eligible are all games released in German between 1 May of the previous year and 30 April – for the 2026 award, that mostly means the new releases around SPIEL'25 in Essen.

Anyone can participate

Anyone living in Germany, Austria or Switzerland may vote – online on the SPIEL website, from early May to the end of July. Every participant picks what they think are the 5 best games of the year – first place gets 5 points, second 4, third 3, fourth 2 and fifth 1 point. Each participant is weighted exactly the same and their points are added up.

List of the 10 best games of the year

The 10 games with the highest total score are published. Places 4 to 10 are announced in late summer, places 1 to 3 only at the SPIEL press conference in Essen. The game with the highest score wins the "Deutscher Spielepreis".

Since 1992 also "Deutscher Kinderspielpreis" (German Children's Game Award)

In addition to the 5 best games, each participant may also select a children's game. The one with the most votes becomes the winner of the "Deutscher Kinderspielpreis" for the respective year.
