The best "Hungarian Board Game Award🇭🇺" winners and nominees 2024
Looking for a good game that won or was nominated for the "Hungarian Board Game Award"? Then we have just the thing for you: a list of the best "Hungarian Board Game Award" winners and games that were on the nomination list.
What is the Hungarian Board Game Award?
The "Hungarian Board Game Award" is an award for dice, card & board games. The award originates from 🇭🇺Hungary, was established in 2010 and is chosen by a jury.
Every year, a new five-member jury is elected by the members of the Hungarian Board Game Society in order to maintain the freshness, objectivity and competence of the jury. The awarding process is supervised and organized by a three-member committee.
The Hungarian Board Game Award (also "Magyar Társasjátékdíj") was established with the aim of helping Hungarian customers - by awarding the best recently published family board games that are also available in Hungary.
Requirements for nomination:
- Each nominated game must be fully translated into Hungarian. (At least the components and rules are fully translated and there is a Hungarian description text on the box).
- Only games published in the previous two years are eligible for nomination. The Hungarian publication date is normative in the conformity check.
Award Principles:
The Hungarian Board Game Award focuses on finding the best games for families and casual players. Since families usually do not necessarily have the time to spend hours learning complex rules and playing epic length games, the award focuses on finding games with easy to learn and clear rules, relatively short playing time (about 30-60 minutes) and high replayability. The quality of the translation is also critical in the evaluation, as families cannot be expected to read rules in foreign languages or otherwise fix translation errors. The game mechanism itself must represent something unique and new on the Hungarian market, our goal is to award games with a different, entertaining game experience.
Hungarian Board Game Award Categories
The Hungarian Board Game Award is given every year in the following categories:
- A díj fődíjas társasjátéka (Hungarian Game of the Year).
- Különdíjas társasjáték (Special Award)
More info can be found on the official Hungarian Board Game Award homepage.

Fauna is a captivating educational board game that invites 2-6 players to explore the animal kingdom. Each round, players are presented with a single animal, identified only by name and picture, and they must guess various aspects of its biology such as weight, length, height, tail length, and notably, the geographic regions where the animal resides. The game incorporates a strategic element where players place their tokens on a large map or on scales to indicate their guesses. Once a player places their token on a particular area or measurement, no one else can choose the same spot for that round, adding a competitive twist to the guessing game. Accuracy is rewarded with points, and even near misses can earn a player some credit, but incorrect guesses result in tokens being temporarily removed from play. The game proceeds through several rounds, each featuring a new animal, until a player reaches the predetermined score to win, typically after 8-12 rounds.
