SPIEL 2026 Recap: The New Releases That Defined Essen

· boardgame.tips Editorial Team

SPIEL Essen 2026 was the biggest edition in the fair's history: 230,000 visitors, 997 exhibitors from 53 countries and 2,012 new releases, spread across all eight halls for the first time. The organizer reported the figures in its closing summary on October 26 (SPIEL Essen, October 26, 2026). The fair itself, though, was defined by a game hardly anyone had on their radar beforehand: Greenwood from Feuerland topped the BoardGameGeek Hotness on the very first day and sold out on several days.

Key takeaways

  • Record: 230,000 visitors (10,000 more than in 2025), all four days sold out, 81,200 m² across all eight halls.
  • New releases: The closing summary counts 2,012 new releases; 1,885 had been announced before the fair.
  • Winners of the fair: Greenwood leads the BGG Hotness, followed by Queen Alice, Kingdom Come: Deliverance and -60°.
  • Sold out: According to Brettspiel-News, 22 new releases had sold out at the booths after two days, many of them in Hall 3.
  • Retail: Greenwood is expected in stores from November; the reprint of Eternal Decks is not expected before January.

SPIEL 2026 by the numbers

The fair beat every figure from the previous year. With the newly opened Hall 8 it used the entire Messe Essen grounds for the first time, 81,200 square meters in total. That meant more tickets than in 2025, and still the organizer says SPIEL was "completely sold out on every day" (SPIEL Essen, October 26, 2026). Sunday was the last day to sell out; the announcement only came at Sunday noon (fjelfras.de, October 29, 2026).

Figure Press conference Oct 20 Closing summary Oct 26
Exhibitors 997 from 53 countries 997 from 53 countries
New releases 1,885 2,012
Visitors – 230,000
Floor space – 81,200 m², all eight halls

The press conference figures come from the report by Reich der Spiele (October 21, 2026), the final figures from the organizer's summary. That is why our SPIEL 2026 preview still listed 1,885 new releases.

The fair can hardly grow any further in Essen now. Carol Rapp, managing director of the organizing Merz Verlag, is still clear: "A move is not planned." Instead, SPIEL is growing into the city. The new "Essen spielt!" ("Essen plays!") project brought discounts at 13 partners and three raffled game nights in the city hall, in the Red Dot Museum at Zollverein and on a boat on Lake Baldeney (SPIEL Essen, October 26, 2026).

The new releases that defined the fair

The best measure of the fair's echo is the BGG Hotness. It shows which game pages on BoardGameGeek are being viewed most right now. On October 3, the list was still led by the Kickstarter campaign The Lord of the Rings: The King's Gambit and the Gamefound campaign Arctica. On November 1, the top spots belong to games that were on the tables in Essen (Brettspiel-News, November 2, 2026):

Hotness Nov 1, 2026 Game Publisher (German edition) In the BGG preview
1 Greenwood Feuerland Spiele not in the top 20
2 Queen Alice Combo Games #1
3 Kingdom Come: Deliverance HeidelBÄR Games #6
4 -60° Nanox Games / dlp games #3
8 Eternal Decks Strohmann Games –
14 Carl von Linné Pink Troubadour #9

The table is a selection: #5 is the expansion Harmonies: Crescendo (German title Klang der Wildnis), #6 the cooperative card game Melodies. The right column compares against the ranking of the most anticipated new releases that Brettspiel-News compiled from the official BGG preview list on October 7 (Brettspiel-News, October 7, 2026). The source gives no preview rank for Eternal Decks. Eleven of the top 15 Hotness titles carry a 2026 release year. The fair really did rewrite the list.

Greenwood: the surprise winner

Greenwood by Christos Giannakoulas and Manolis Zachariadis is the game of the fair. It was missing from the 20 most anticipated titles in the preview, yet on the first day of the fair it was #1 in the Hotness. By the end of October it averaged 8.13 points from 222 ratings on BGG (Brettspiel-News, November 2, 2026). That rating is still shaky, though: on BoardGameGeek users complained about 1s, 3s and 4s without comment, while others countered that some people handed out 9s and 10s without having played the game.

The game sold out at the booth several times. Feuerland announced 200 new copies for Saturday and 150 for Sunday (Brettspiel-News, October 23, 2026). The publisher lists Greenwood for 1 to 4 players aged 14 and up, at around 40 minutes per player and an MSRP of €79.90 (Feuerland Spiele, retrieved November 2, 2026).

Queen Alice, Kingdom Come and -60°: the favorites delivered

Three of the most anticipated games from the preview sit right behind it and lived up to the hype. For Queen Alice by Héctor Carrión Benavent and David Heras Pino, a line of more than 50 meters formed shortly after 9 a.m. on the Friday of the fair, half an hour before sales opened (Brettspiel-News, November 2, 2026). Kingdom Come: Deliverance by Vlaada Chvátil and Tomáš Holek takes you to Bohemia in 1403, where you start out as ordinary people; BGG calls it an adventure game with Euro elements (Brettspiel-News, November 2, 2026). -60° by Alexander Pfister and Peter Prinz sends research teams to a meteorite impact site in Antarctica (Brettspiel-News, October 7, 2026).

The themes that ran through the halls

Thematically, the fair continued what had been building before it. Board game blogger Tobias of fjelfras.de observed that the trend toward nature themes persists, "preferably combined with anthropomorphic animals". Two-player games also stayed popular, and almost every larger publisher had at least one trick-taking game among its new releases (fjelfras.de, October 29, 2026). That matches the sold-out list: two two-player games, Shimoda Perry Road and Isle of Bears, also sold out quickly (Brettspiel-News, October 23, 2026).

Sold out in Essen: when the hits reach stores

After two days of the fair, Brettspiel-News counted 22 new releases that had sold out at the booths, three of them only until the next morning. The shelves were emptiest in Hall 3 (Brettspiel-News, October 23, 2026). For some titles there is already information on restocks:

Game Publisher At the fair When available again
Greenwood Feuerland Spiele daily allotments, sold out several times in stores from November (Brettspieltag, October 26, 2026)
Eternal Decks Strohmann Games 30 copies each morning, sold out daily reprint not expected before January
Era of Atlantis Seajay Games only 30 copies left on Thursday restock from China in November
Rival Seas Jumping Turtle Games sold out orderable again after the fair
Turbo-Flitzpiepen 2000 – only 300 copies in Essen already sold out in stores, no date given
Rebirth Frosted Games sold out at the booth still available in stores

All table entries without their own link come from the Brettspiel-News sold-out list (October 23, 2026). Turbo-Flitzpiepen 2000 is the German edition of Magical Athlete. For the other sold-out titles, such as Prag im Verborgenen (Prague Unseen), Stefan Freund's Go West or Nacht im Zoo (Night at the Zoo), the source gives no release date. Check the publisher's website for those.

Two expansions for games in our catalog also went fast: Dschungelfieber (Jungle Fever) for Boss Fighters QR and Am Meeresgrund (On the Seabed) for Endeavor: Deep Sea. That expansion adds four new scenarios and a revised solo and co-op mode (Brettspiel-News, October 23, 2026).

More than new games

According to the organizer, SPIEL is "increasingly becoming an experience event as well". New this year was a Warhammer 40k laser tag in the Saal Europa, with 12-versus-12 matches. The Golden Demon painting competition drew well over 1,000 miniatures in 14 categories, and Maxime Penaud from France took the overall win. The organizer also presented the TCG Awards for trading card games for the first time, in 13 categories (SPIEL Essen, October 26, 2026).

The audience award was settled before the first day of the fair: the Deutscher Spielepreis 2026 (the German fan-voted game award) went to Artengarten by Mathias Wigge, ahead of Boss Fighters QR and Galactic Cruise. The background on the vote is in our post on the Deutscher Spielepreis 2026.

Bottom line

SPIEL 2026 set records in every figure, but the real winner was a game: Greenwood arrived in Essen without much preview hype and left as the most-watched new release. The big favorites Queen Alice, Kingdom Come: Deliverance and -60° met expectations. If you came home empty-handed, the wait varies: Greenwood is announced for November, Eternal Decks will likely take until the new year, and there is no date yet for Turbo-Flitzpiepen 2000. Which new releases hold up in everyday play is shown in our growing list of the best games of SPIEL 2026. The next SPIEL takes place from October 21 to 24, 2027. Until then, our overview of board game events in November 2026 offers more chances to try new games.
