Dancing Birds*

Dancing Birds is a colourful card game by Dirk Henn for 2 to 4 players aged 8 and up. If you know Rummy, you'll feel at home right away: collect bird cards and lay them out as choreographies and dance groups.

What's it about?

Spring has arrived and the birds are ready to dance. You gather bright bird cards and set them out in front of you. The more birds dancing in your formations, the more points you score when the round ends.

How a turn works

  1. Draw one card, from the deck or a face-up discard pile.
  2. Play new sets or add cards to existing ones.
  3. Finish by discarding a card.

Valid formations

  • Choreography: at least three birds of one colour in number order
  • Dance group: at least three birds of different colours with the same number
  • Cockatoos are wild and stand in for any bird

You may also add cards to other players' displays. It's a handy way to empty your hand faster.

Ending a round

A round ends when someone discards their last card. That player earns a bonus. Rounds continue until somebody reaches at least 30 points, and the highest score wins.

Conclusion

Dancing Birds is Rummy with feathers. Families and casual groups get a familiar game that's quick to teach and plays in 20 to 30 minutes. If you're after something genuinely new or deep, it won't surprise you much.
