Garten-Zwerge e.V.*

Garten-Zwerge e.V. is a funny auction and trading card game for 2 to 6 players aged 12+. The gnome club's presidency goes to whoever gets a golden cap.

What is it about?

The president of the "Golden Cap" garden gnome society has passed away, and the hunt for a successor is on. The coveted post goes to the first member who breeds a golden-capped gnome or simply buys one. Buying is expensive, though: it costs 4000 Petals, the club's currency.

What you do

  • Bid on gnomes to use for breeding
  • Trade and haggle with the other players
  • Send gnomes to beauty contests
  • Or put them to honest work in the garden

Each choice moves you forward in a different way. Smart bids and a well-timed bluff bring the golden cap closer.

A round in short

  1. Gnomes go up for auction.
  2. You decide whether each gnome breeds, competes or works.
  3. Your earnings fund your next bids.
  4. The first player with a golden cap becomes president.

Who is it for?

The BGG community rates it best with three or four players. A game takes about an hour. The cards carry some German text, but it is easy to memorise.

Conclusion

Roman Mathar's Garten-Zwerge e.V. (Argentum Verlag, 2004) lives on its quirky theme and table-talk bidding. Fans of auction games and club-room humour will have a fun evening. If you want deep strategy, look elsewhere.
