What is TSR?
The board game company "TSR" was founded by Gary Gygax and Don Kaye in 1972. The current company headquarters is in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, USA🇺🇸. TSR's debut game was "Dungeons & Dragons." The game publisher is also known as "Dragon Publishing", "Tactical Studies Rules", "TSR Hobbies, Inc.".
Famous TSR games include Dungeon!, The Awful Green Things From Outer Space & Dragon Dice.
History of TSR
The board game company "TSR" (Tactical Studies Rules Inc.) was founded by Gary Gygax and Don Kaye in 1972 and dissolved in 1997. The company headquarters at that time was in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, USA🇺🇸. TSR's debut work was "Dungeons & Dragons".
In December 2011, it was announced by Gary Gygax's sons that they own the rights to the TSR brand and they have formed a new company.
Dungeons & Dragons as a foundation
Tactical Studies Rules was formed to formally publish and sell the rules of Dungeons & Dragons, the first modern role-playing game. The partnership of the two founders was later joined by Brian Blume and (temporarily) Dave Arneson.
In 1975 Don Kaye died, the partnership was dissolved, and the remaining owners formed a new company TSR Hobbies, Inc.
In 1983, the firm was split into four companies, TSR, Inc. (primary successor), TSR International, TSR Ventures and TSR Entertainment, Inc.
Poor business practices & poor treatment of the community lead to sale to WotC
As TSR was no longer able to cover its publishing costs due to various factors, TSR was bought out by Wizards of the Coast (WotC) in 1997. WotC initially retained the TSR name for its D&D products, but in 2000 the TSR name was dropped, coinciding with the release of D&D 3rd Edition.
