Who or what is Perry Rhodan?

Perry Rhodan is the eponymous hero of a series of German science fiction novels published weekly in "novel booklet" format (usually 66 pages) since September 8, 1961. As of February 2019, 3000 booklet novels of the original series plus 850 spin-off novels of the sister series Atlan plus over 400 paperbacks and 200 hardcovers have been published, totaling over 300,000 pages. With some two billion copies sold (in novella format) worldwide alone (including over one billion in Germany), it is the most successful science fiction book series ever written. The first billion copies sold worldwide was celebrated in 1986.
