The best Yahtzee-like games 🎲 2026

Looking for a new Yahtzee challenge 🎲? We have picked out and compared the best board games similar to Yahtzee.

What is Yahtzee anyway?

Yahtzee is one of the first roll-and-write dice games.

In this list you will find games, expansions, promos, etc. that are either directly based on the traditional, public domain dice game "Yacht", including its variants, offshoots and descendants. The most popular representative is "Yahtzee" - known in Germany as "Kniffel". In addition, we have added games strongly inspired by Yahtzee to the list - especially in the last few years some very innovative interpratations of Yahtzee have been created.

Yacht - the forefather of Kniffel/Yahtzee

In the 1920s, some card players were looking for a game they could play on their yacht. They tried dice, but found the existing dice games unsatisfactory. So they invented a game based on poker hands but using dice. They named the game Yacht, after the place where it was first played.

How does Yahtzee work?

The object of the game is to score the most points by rolling five dice to make certain combinations. The dice can be rolled up to three times in a round to try to form one of the thirteen possible scoring combinations. A game of Yahtzee consists of thirteen rounds in which the player chooses which scoring combination to use in that round. Once a combination has been used in the game, it cannot be used again.

The scoring combinations have different point values, some of which are fixed values and some of which have the cumulative value of the dice. A "Yahtzee" is five of the same dice and has the highest point value of the game of 50 (though multiple "Yahtzee" in the same game are sometimes allowed - and sometimes not - depending on the rule)."
