The best games with Area Movement 2026

Looking for a really good game with a map or floor plan? Then we have just the thing for you: the list with the best uneven game plan games 2026.

What are games with uneven game board?

The game board or game plan is divided into non-repeating, irregularly shaped areas or regions - for example, a map with country borders or the floor plan of a building with the different, uneven spaces. Movement is always possible only from region to region - this therefore also determines the sequence of moves, no room/Region may be skipped. However, in some games there are teleporters, ports, airports or subway stations. These then allow jumping between non-adjacent regions.

Differentiation of "Area Movement" to "Grid Movement

By the way, "uneven board" is called "area movement" - to be distinguished from grid movement games like squares (e.g. Chess) or hexagons (e.g. Settlers of Catan).

Examples of games with uneven grids

A good example of an uneven game board game is Risk. The game board is a world map divided into several regions. Note, however, that the regions that can only be reached by waterway (Japan, Madagascar, Greenland, Iceland) are actually Point-to-Point Movements.

Another game with movement between regions is Icecool, here the game world is pieced together from multiple game boxes (which fit into each other and are thus unequal in size).
